Ladies of the Manor Series, Book 3
I absolutely adored this story! This one’s a must-read. The witty banter between Ella and Cayton was humorous and charming. The chemistry between them was so well written. Plenty danger and intrigue kept me turning the pages to see what would happen. I really enjoyed seeing some of the characters that were ‘bad guys’ in previous books get their chance for redemption. Also, as someone who loves visual aids in a book, I was glad they included a list of the characters, their different titles and connections at the beginning. It’s nice to have a reference to keep track of everybody, especially if you haven’t read the previous books.
Plot: Lady Ella Myerston is visiting her friends, Duke and Duchess of Stafford, with an ulterior motive. She’s determined to find the legendary Fire Eyes Diamond and take them far away from both her friends and her own brother and sister-in-law, the Duke and Duchess of Nottingham, in order to protect both couples from the curse that surrounds the diamonds. After passing over the woman he was expected to marry for a wealthier match, Lord James Cayton has a long way to go to prove he’s a changed man. After his wife’s death, he’s raising their daughter and hoping to make up for his past. He doesn’t believe he’s worthy of the charming Lady Ella, but when untrustworthy Lord Rushworth shows an interest in Ella and the Fire Eyes, Cayton will do whatever he can to keep her safe.
Characters: What an excellent cast of characters! The story is told through the third person narratives of Ella, Cayton, and Kira, an injured ballerina forced to play a maid in order to find where the Fire Eyes are hidden. Lady Ella is so much fun, as she enjoys teasing the somewhat surly Cayton. I love her propensity for wandering off and getting lost. For his gruff exterior, Cayton definitely has a soft spot for his daughter, Addie, and possibly is developing one for Lady Ella as well. Readers of The Lost Heiress (book 1) will be delighted to see Brooke return in a big role.
Recommendation: I’d strongly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys inspirational historical fiction. This is one of my favorite series ever! I’d suggest reading the books in order, though, as the is a thread about the Fire Eyes connects all three.
